English?The Need for Support
The Department of English is an exciting place. We are training the next generation of teachers, business professionals, attorneys, creative writers, university professors, and entrepreneurs. We work with students to achieve their vocational and personal goals and help instill in them a love of literature, language, writing, and culture. Every student who receives a degree from West Virginia University takes English classes. The work we do impacts all of them in life-changing ways.
English studies cross all disciplinary boundaries. In teaching writing and the analysis of literature, we are teaching students to reflect upon the world around them and to find their place in it. We work with students on the skills necessary for effective communication in a national and international context of rapid cultural and technological change.
The Department of English is an innovative and forward-looking department. We house the Center for Writing Excellence, devoted to helping students hone their written communication skills. The department also houses the Center for Literary Computing, a place where cutting-edge research is conducted on the intersection of writing and technology. We have inaugurated a new MA in Professional Writing and Editing, one that complements our successful MA program in English, our distinguished MFA program in Creative Writing, and our nationally-known PhD program in English.
We in the Department of English are continually seeking to support our students in their academic and career training and are committed to providing them with multiple opportunities to enrich their lives and worldviews.
The Department of English at West Virginia University is an excellent investment for the future because we are working to improve the future of all students at WVU.
