Undergraduate students must meet with Prof. Scott Wible in order to register for the PWE internship course English 491A: Professional Field Experience.

Graduate students must meet with Prof. Brian Ballentine in order to register for the MA in PWE internship course English 610: PWE Internship.

We would like to encourage you to begin thinking about the types of positions that you would be interested in working in for your internship. Below is a list of several internship openings for the Spring 2008 semester. While we encourage you to apply for any of these opportunities please note that some of these positions may favor graduate students. This list is by no means exhaustive, so please contact Profs. Wible or Ballentine if you have ideas for other positions you would like to pursue or if you would like to hear about other possible positions at WVU or in Morgantown.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The WVU Press seeks 3-4 professional writing and editing students for internship positions. PWE interns at the WVU Press assist in a wide range of tasks related to the production and marketing of Press publications, including copyediting; researching and fact-checking; corresponding with authors; designing cover and page layouts; and writing press releases.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The WVU Business Incubator is seeking 2-3 professional writing and editing students for internship positions.

PWE interns in the Business Incubator will assist and support the multiple organizations and businesses operating within and through the Business Incubator as well as providing support for the WVU Business Incubator, the Office of Technology Transfer, and WVU Research Corporation. Projects typically include the following writing activities:

– Writing and editing press releases and news stories for various types of publications
– Assisting in writing and editing grant proposals
– Assisting in writing and editing business plans
– Writing and editing promotional materials for Incubator tenants, the Business Incubator, and the Office of Technology Transfer

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Monongalia County Literacy Volunteers is seeking a PWE intern to produce a program for its ?Readin’ Ritin’ and Rastlin’? fundraising event, which will be held Sunday April 6, 2008 at the Craig Civic Center in Kingwood. Ideally this intern will have skills and an interest in graphic design and page layout. The PWE intern will also be writing
documents (e.g., press releases, fundraising letters to potential event sponsors, correspondence with sponsors) to publicize this event and coordinate the production of the event program.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Fitness Information Technology, Inc. (FIT) seeks one professional writing and editing intern to assist in the copyediting of academic journal articles and to write related documents such as author bios and correspondence with authors. FIT is an international publisher in the sport and exercise field, publishing approximately 75 textbooks,

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Community Development Team (CDT) is a group of interdisciplinary faculty members and students who travel to rural parts of West Virginia to evaluate, strategize, create, and present ideas about revitalizing the local community. Participating faculty include applied social sciences, civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, and others. All of this activity happens over one condensed weekend where the team travels and stays within the community. Chris Plein, chair of the public administration department, is one of the team leaders along with Megan Stalebrink from the Davis College of Agricultural, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences. The CDT is eager for a PWE person to be ?embedded? in the entire process and be the point person who creates the final report detailing the recommendations for the community. There is funding for you to travel and stay in the area. Prof. Ballentine has bound hardcopies of the CDT?s last project and here is a link to more information:

The CDT has been a project for 10 years and they are now running 2 projects a semester. The first Fall project begins in October! There is a lot of opportunity here to network with members of other departments.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The u101 Game Project with Prof. Sandy Baldwin. All incoming WVU students are required to take U101. The general course description reads:

?The purpose of University 101 is to provide you, the first-year student, with tools for making a successful transition from high school to college; to ensure that you become an active, responsible member of the WVU student body; to help you develop a better understanding of the learning process; and to help you acquire basic academic survival skills.?

The Game Project is an ongoing effort to create an interactive gaming environment presenting students with possible and challenging real-world scenarios. Researching and writing scripts for the game are a big part of the internship. Last year the script involved interviews with the people who teach about alcohol awareness and then developing a script complete with possible responses and outcomes. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Participate in an ethnographic study with Prof. Sandy Baldwin. Prof. Baldwin just received a NSF grant dedicated to ?exploring relations between creative writing practices, on the one hand, and computer and information science and engineering, on the other.? He is bringing in a visiting creative writer and he is searching for two PWE students to complete an ethnographical accounting of the project. If you are interested in this project please contact Prof. Baldwin.

BPMI, a Pittsburgh based company the sub-contracts with the Navy on submarine engines and parts, is seeking technical writers to serve as interns on new and existing projects.
