Chair’s Welcome from Donald E. Hall

Exciting things are happening in the English Department at West Virginia University!

Our undergraduate majors are going off to leading graduate programs, law schools, and professional schools across the country.

Our graduate students are publishing their work in nationally and internationally recognized venues and are giving papers at some of the most prestigious conferences in the nation.

Our faculty members are winning awards for their teaching, creative writing, and research, and are publishing books, essays, poetry, short stories, and novels that are redefining their fields and genres.

Our department continues to host its very successful annual summer seminar in literary and cultural studies and its exciting annual creative writer’s workshop. In 2007 the department co-sponsored the African Literature Association Conference, which drew an international audience, and in 2008 we hosted the Association of Departments of English Summer Seminar.

We are very pleased to welcome three new faculty in 2008—Kayode Ogunfolabi, Emily Mitchell, and Joy Greene—and to be hiring another tenure-track faculty for 2009, in the field of Latino/a American Literature.

And we relocated earlier this year to a beautifully restored historic building—Colson Hall—where we have state-of-the-art facilities and excellent resources for our students and faculty!

Come visit us and become a part of a truly exceptional and engaged community of students, scholars, writers, teachers, and staff members.

We welcome your support and extend our special thanks to the community of alumni and department friends who help make our successes possible! Visit our alumni/friends/development website http://english.wvu.edu/alumni_friends_development to learn more!
