Double Major

Many students are finding it valuable to earn two certified majors or to “double major.” An English degree, when combined with certain other majors, is exceptional preparation for graduate school and for the job market. English double majors usually choose among biology, business, computer science, chemistry, foreign languages, history, journalism, political science, psychology, or theater. A double-major student is advised by only one department. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the second department of academic decisions and to maintain copies of records in the other department. Consult the WVU Undergraduate Catalog for specific University and College requirements for double majors. For additional advice, contact any of the Department of English undergraduate advisers.

English Education

At WVU, students who plan to teach English at the secondary level (junior high and high school) are part of a five-year teacher education program administered by the College of Human Resources and Education. During the course of study, students take classes in both English and education and participate in supervised public school placement. During the fifth year, students participate in a student teaching internship, do research, and take graduate level course work. At the end of the fifth year, students are granted a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Science degree in English Education, and are eligible for teacher certification. Students who wish to pursue teacher certification must be accepted into this program. For additional information, contact:

Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Increasingly, English majors are finding employment in foreign countries as teachers of English. Japan and Eastern Europe have been especially interested in hiring Americans to teach English. Teaching English as a foreign language provides an opportunity to travel, visit, and live in a foreign country. Interested students should take Language 293 (Special Topics: Teaching English as a Second Language) in the Department of Foreign Languages. This course is offered each semester.
