Elena Illa Graham Memorial Scholarship

The Elena Illa Graham Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the Department to a West Virginia freshman or sophomore. The recipient must be a full-time student and a National Merit Semi-Finalist Scholar planning to major in English.

Eleanor Tucker Donley Memorial Scholarship

The Eleanor Tucker Donley Memorial Scholarship is presented by the Department to the outstanding junior English major. The recipient must be a full-time student. English majors with the highest grade-point average become eligible for this Award. Once these individuals are identified, faculty are asked to comment on the candidates. Often candidates are interviewed and asked to submit a written statement about their professional goals. Selection is made in April for the succeeding academic year.

Virginia Butts Sturm Undergraduate Scholarship

The Virginia Butts Sturm Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate English major of sophomore rank, i.e., someone who has completed at least 28 but not more than 58 hours of course work. Eligible students are invited to apply.

Virginia Butts Sturm Creative Writing Scholarship

The Virginia Butts Sturm Creative Writing Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate English major in the creative writing concentration who is nearing completion of course work for the concentration. Eligible students are invited to apply. For more information, contact:

Lenora Ann Yokum Presidential Scholarship

The Lenora Ann Yokum Presidential Scholarship is awarded by the Department to students majoring in English at WVU who have graduated from high schools in either Hardy or Randolph County.

McKay-Coast Scholarship

The McKay-Coast Scholarship is awarded by the Department to students majoring in English who have financial need and academic promise or potential. The scholarship could be awarded to sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Students may receive scholarship support for a maximum of three years.

Edith F. and Robert E. Coley Presidential Scholarship

The Coley Scholarship is awarded to pre-English majors, English majors, or English graduate students through the WVU Scholars Office.

Sophia and Virgil Peterson Academic Enrichment Grant

English majors are invited to apply for the Sophie and Virgil Peterson Enrichment Grant of $500 to support an academic activity such as an internship, field trip, study abroad program, conference participation, or workshop opportunity. The grant is intended to fund academic activities related to peace studies, community action, or personal growth. Applications will be evaluated based on their relevance to one of these targeted fields and the applicant’s financial need. To apply, please write a 1-2-page statement describing the academic activity and its relevance to one of the three target fields, and include a paragraph explaining why this grant is financially necessary to complete the activity.
