Departmental Writing Contests
The Department sponsors two creative writing competitions annually in the spring semester: the Jon Scott Nelson Creative Writing Awards and the Waitman Barbe Creative Writing Awards. Prizes are given for the best poetry, fiction, or drama submitted by an undergraduate student. Students may submit a work or group of works. The Department also sponsors the James Paul Brawner Writing Contest, which recognizes achievements in undergraduate and graduate expository writing. The Jon Scott Nelson Freshman Writing Awards recognizes the best expository papers written by freshman students. Judging for all departmental writing contests is by faculty committee, and the achievements are recognized at the Department of English Awards Luncheon held in the spring. These contests are announced in all English classes early in the spring semester. For further information, contact:
