The Major
The English major at West Virginia University is designed to help you acquire skills to read and analyze complex material, interpret and assess what you read, conduct language-based research, and write lucid and concise prose.
While there are specific requirements of the Department of English and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the program in English can also be very flexible. You are able to select courses from all three of the Department’s general areas (writing, language, and literature) or to focus on only one of these areas. The literacy skills, general knowledge, and humanistic perspective you develop as an English major will be valuable assets upon your graduation.
A degree in English offers many opportunities. Graduates from the program have continued their education by attending graduate school or have used their English degree as a pre-professional degree for medical or law school. Still others have pursued careers in media-related fields, creative writing, or management positions in insurance and banking.
If you would like to talk to an English advisor about majoring in English feel free to call the advising office at 304-293-9740, stop by 118 Colson Hall, or contact the English advisors by emailing Jonathan Burton, Adam Komisaruk, Rosemary Hathaway or Gwen Bergner.
