Elena Illa Graham Memorial Scholarship

The Elena Illa Graham Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the Department to a West Virginia freshman or sophomore. The recipient must be a full-time student and a National Merit Semi-Finalist Scholar planning to major in English.

Eleanor Tucker Donley Memorial Scholarship

The Eleanor Tucker Donley Memorial Scholarship is presented by the Department to the outstanding junior English major. The recipient must be a full-time student. English majors with the highest grade-point average become eligible for this Award. Once these individuals are identified, faculty are asked to comment on the candidates. Often candidates are interviewed and asked to submit a written statement about their professional goals. Selection is made in April for the succeeding academic year.

Lenora Ann Yokum Presidential Scholarship

The Lenora Ann Yokum Presidential Scholarship is awarded by the Department to students majoring in English at WVU who have graduated from high schools in either Hardy or Randolph County.

McKay-Coast Scholarship

The McKay-Coast Scholarship is awarded by the Department to students majoring in English who have financial need and academic promise or potential. The scholarship could be awarded to sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Students may receive scholarship support for a maximum of three years.

Virginia Butts Sturm Undergraduate Scholarship

The Virginia Butts Sturm Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate English major of sophomore rank, i.e., someone who has completed at least 28 but not more than 58 hours of course work. Eligible students are invited to apply.

Virginia Butts Sturm Creative Writing Scholarship

The Virginia Butts Sturm Creative Writing Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate English major in the creative writing concentration who is nearing completion of course work for the concentration. Eligible students are invited to apply.

Sophia and Virgil Peterson Academic Enrichment Grant

English majors are invited to apply for the Sophie and Virgil Peterson Enrichment Grant of $500 to support an academic activity such as an internship, field trip, study abroad program, conference participation, or workshop opportunity. The grant is intended to fund academic activities related to peace studies, community action, or personal growth. Applications will be evaluated based on their relevance to one of these targeted fields and the applicant’s financial need.

To apply, please write a 1-2-page statement describing the academic activity and its relevance to one of the three target fields, and include a paragraph explaining why this grant is financially necessary to complete the activity.

Appalachian Writing Award

This contest is open to all undergraduate students at WVU who grew up in Appalachia, which includes all of West Virginia, and whose work is set in Appalachia. The student will receive a scholarship to the West Virginia Writers’ Workshop, which features writers of national reputation and is held in July of each year in Morgantown. This contest is funded by writer Dwight Harshbarger.

James Paul Brawner Expository Writing Contest

Upon Dr. Brawner’s retirement in 1972, the Department established this award in his honor. Dr. Brawner served as department chair for 18 years.

Jon Scott Nelson Freshman Creative Writing Award

This award was established by Dr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Nelson in memory of their son, Jon Scott Nelson. Contributions have been made by friends, relatives, and classmates.

In 1992, Dr. and Mrs. Nelson established the additional contest for student papers from English 101.

This contest is open to all students enrolled in undergraduate Professional Writing and Editing courses.

This contest was established in 1991 to honor Russ MacDonald upon his retirement.

This contest honors former English faculty member Waitman Barbe, a published writer and poet who served on the faculty from 1895 until his death in 1925.

Linda Baer Scholarship

Funds shall be used annually or otherwise for student scholarship aid in the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. The recipients shall be regularly enrolled at WVU as pre-English majors, English majors or English graduate students. Students in the Scholars Program do not need to meet financial need requirements. However, if there are no Scholars Program students available in any year, then all recipients shall have demonstrated a) need for financial assistance and b) academic promise as determined by appropriate officials of the WVU Office of Student Financial Aid and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Scholarships shall be awarded in the name of the honoree, Linda A. Baer.

Rose Burton Isaacs Scholarship

Funds shall be used annually or otherwise for student scholarship aid for regularly enrolled students, with first preference being given to students in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences enrolled in a program of studies leading to a degree in writing, literature, or poetry. The recipients shall have demonstrated a) need for financial assistance and b) high academic promise as determined by appropriate officials of the WVU Office of Student Financial Aid. Scholarships shall be awarded in the name of the honoree, Rose Burton Isaacs.
