I am a Technical Publication Specialist at Pratt & Whitney—an American aerospace manufacturer with global service operations. Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines are used both in civil and military aviation by over 1,100 airlines and 200 countries.
I jointed the Pratt & Whitney team in December of 2018. As a technical publication specialist, I work to manage, write, and edit internal documentation. Pratt & Whitney takes the safety of the flying public into its hands every day. For this reason, maintaining immaculate internal documentation is crucial, as these documents are the instructions sets used to assemble each inducted engine. The majority of my job is writing and publishing the standard operating procedures, which are used to assemble engines on the shop floor. I work to write procedures that accurately describe each shop process that Pratt & Whitney performs, while also ensuring that these processes adhere to the standards set by the applicable regulatory agencies.
My time at West Virginia University helped to prepare me for this position. As a graduate student, I did not expect to be working in the aerospace industry. However, the Professional Writing and Editing program helped me learn to think critically about language and rhetoric. Because this knowledge was not inherently tied to any industry, I was able to explore my career options and try something new and unexpected. After finishing the Professional Writing and Editing program, I know that I am well prepared to continue my career, because WVU has provided the fundamental knowledge I will need to be successful as a technical writer in any industry.
